Backflow prevention: what Atlantic Beach property owners should know

Start with your water utility’s notice
Backflow is water moving in the wrong direction through a cross-connection. A prevention assembly is designed to help keep water from an irrigation system or another potential contamination source from flowing back toward the drinking-water supply. The right protection depends on the connection and the applicable requirements.
If you receive a testing or repair notice, keep it. Share the utility name, property address, device information and deadline when you contact a service provider. Requirements depend on the utility, device and use; a general article should not substitute for the instructions on your notice.
Testing, repair and replacement are different scopes
A test checks the assembly’s operation using appropriate equipment. A leaking fitting, failed internal component or damaged assembly may need repair or replacement, followed by the required testing. Ask whether the proposed price includes the test, parts, installation, retesting and any reporting your utility requires.

Useful information before the visit
A photo of the whole assembly and its label can help us discuss the work. Tell us where it is, whether water is actively leaking, whether it supplies irrigation or the building, and whether a cage, gate or manager controls access. For a business or shared property, identify who can authorize the work and any shutdown.
Avoid adjusting an unfamiliar assembly or bypassing the protection. Call with the symptoms so the next step can be discussed for the actual installation.
