HONEST ANSWERS ABOUT PRICING
Why We Prefer Time and Materials for Plumbing Repairs
A fair price should reflect the work your home needs. Here’s why we prefer time and materials for many plumbing repairs.
A plumbing quote should help you make a decision, not leave you wondering how much of the price is there “just in case.” That’s a big reason we prefer time-and-material pricing for many repairs at Advantage Plumbing.
It’s a straightforward idea: the bill is based on the labor involved and the materials used. We still need to cover our overhead and make a fair profit. But we don’t have to price every repair as though it will turn into the hardest version of that job.
Plumbing comes with unknowns
Two homes can have the same leaking shower valve and very different repairs. One valve is easy to reach. The other is behind tile, connected to old piping, or held together by fittings that won’t cooperate.
Until we get into the work, we may not know which situation we’re dealing with.

A leak behind a wall or above a ceiling is a good example. The visible stain tells us something needs attention, but it doesn’t tell us exactly what is leaking or how much work it will take to reach it. Time and materials lets us investigate, explain what we find, and charge for the work involved.
With a fixed price, we have to account for those possibilities upfront. That usually means building a cushion into the quote so a difficult repair doesn’t leave us taking a loss.
In our experience, the customer often loses on that tradeoff. If the job goes smoothly, they can still end up paying a price that was built to cover problems their home never had.
A simpler repair should have a simpler bill
Say a repair looks like it might take several hours, but our plumber finds a straightforward solution and finishes sooner. With time and materials, less labor can mean a lower bill. The customer benefits when the work is simpler than expected.
That feels fair to us. You shouldn’t have to pay for a worst-case scenario just because we couldn’t see everything behind a wall when you called.
It also gives us room to investigate the actual problem. We want to recommend what your home needs, without turning every unknown into an expensive replacement.
A local school repair: find the problem, then fix it
At a local school, a toilet had been moved, and we were called out without knowing exactly what was wrong. Once on site, our plumber quickly identified the issue and fixed it.

Charging time and materials saved the school money on that repair. They paid for the labor and materials needed to solve the problem, rather than a higher fixed price with a cushion for unknowns. That’s the kind of result we want: the customer benefits when an experienced plumber finds a straightforward solution.
It protects our customers—and our company
If a job turns out to be more involved, the time spent solving it still matters. Our plumbers deserve to be paid for their work, and we need to cover the materials, equipment, insurance, trucks, and other costs of doing the job properly.
Time and materials gives us a way to charge for that work without asking every customer to fund a large contingency upfront. We can make an honest living while keeping the price connected to the repair.
Of course, an hourly rate alone doesn’t make a company honest. Good communication matters just as much. Our goal is to explain what we know, talk through the uncertainty, and help you understand your choices. We also give pricing over the phone whenever we reasonably can.
Ask how the price works
We don’t add a dispatch fee on top of work performed. We want you to understand how the repair is priced, without a separate dispatch charge layered onto the work.
Before work begins, ask about the labor rate, minimum charges, service-call fees, and how materials are priced. Ask for an estimated range and how unexpected work will be handled. Those questions are reasonable, and you deserve clear answers.
A fixed price can offer peace of mind when the scope is clear. Time and materials isn’t a promise that every repair will cost less. We prefer it for many plumbing repairs because it lets the price follow the work instead of a guess about everything that could go wrong.
