How a Second Opinion Saved a Homeowner From an $18,000 Repipe
The home had already been repiped. A closer look revealed water entering around a window—and helped a young homeowner avoid unnecessary work.
A young, first-time homeowner had been told she had a slab leak and needed an approximately $18,000 repipe on her two-bathroom home. When Advantage Plumbing took a second look, the problem turned out to be water entering around a window. Her plumbing was fine.
That distinction could have saved her from spending or financing thousands of dollars on work that would not have solved the problem. It is also a reminder of why a major repair recommendation deserves a careful diagnosis.
The recommendation didn’t match the house
Our estimator has been a plumber for about 30 years. Within a few minutes of arriving, he noticed something that did not add up: the home had already been recently repiped, and its water lines no longer ran under the slab.
The homeowner had been given a major plumbing diagnosis. The plumbing in front of our estimator told a different story. He kept looking.
He found that water was entering around a window and making its way into the bedroom. Rain or the sprinkler system was the source of the water, rather than a leaking plumbing line.
A second repipe would have left the actual water-entry problem unresolved. The homeowner needed to address where water was getting into the home; she did not need us to replace her water lines.
The right answer can be a smaller job—or no plumbing job at all
We did not make any money on that call, and that’s okay. We slept great that night and helped a homeowner avoid an unnecessary expense of approximately $18,000. That is what someone should be able to expect when they trust a professional enough to invite them into their home.

Experience matters because a symptom alone does not tell the whole story. Water in a bedroom is a reason to investigate. It is not, by itself, a reason to replace a home’s plumbing.
Questions to ask before agreeing to a repipe
You do not need to become a plumber to ask for a clear explanation. If you are facing a large estimate, these questions can help you understand the recommendation:
- Where is the problem? Ask the company to identify the suspected source and explain the evidence behind the diagnosis.
- What plumbing is actually in the home? Mention any previous repipe or other plumbing work you know about.
- Why is this amount of work necessary? Ask whether there are reasonable alternatives and why they are being recommended or ruled out.
- What is included in the estimate? Get the scope, price, and any exclusions in writing so you can compare proposals.
- Will this work address the source of the water? Make sure the proposed solution follows from the diagnosis.
If something does not make sense, ask another licensed and insured company to evaluate it. For a major repair, multiple estimates can help you compare both the diagnosis and the proposed work. When there is active damage, ask what needs immediate attention and what can reasonably wait for another opinion.
You deserve an explanation you can understand
